How to Choose a Martial Arts School for Your Child

Not all martial arts schools are the same, and the differences matter more than the style on the sign. The right school can give your child years of confidence, fitness and friendship. The wrong one can put them off for good.

Here’s what we’d ask if we were choosing a school for our own kids.

Questions to ask the school

Who will actually teach my child?

The instructor matters more than anything else. Ask about their training, their rank and how long they’ve been teaching kids. A great instructor knows how to keep a class safe, how to explain things at a child’s level and how to bring out the quiet kid at the back. At Safeguard, classes are led by Sensei Troy Parker, a 4th-degree black belt who has been training since he was four years old.

Is the floor fully padded?

Kids fall, roll and jump a lot. Training barefoot on hardwood or thin carpet is hard on growing joints. Look for padded flooring that covers the whole training area. We explain why in the #1 safety feature to look for.

Are classes split by age?

A five-year-old and a twelve-year-old need very different classes. Age groups mean drills match your child’s attention span and size.

Can I watch?

You should always be able to see what’s happening. We have a parents’ viewing area that looks right onto the mat, and most parents watch every class.

How do belts work?

Ask how students move up. Belts should be earned through skill and effort, not handed out on a schedule. Be wary of any school that promises a black belt within a couple of years.

Is there a trial?

A good school is confident enough to let you try before you commit. Every Safeguard program starts with a trial, so you and your child can get a real feel for the class.

How do you help kids who struggle to focus?

Every class has kids who find sitting still hard. Some have ADHD or autism. Ask how the instructor handles it. Structure, clear routines and patience help every child, and they make a huge difference for kids who see the world a little differently.

Questions to ask about your child

Then think about what your child needs right now:

  • Do they have the confidence to meet new challenges?
  • Could they stand up for themselves, or a friend, in a bullying situation?
  • Can they focus in school, or under pressure?
  • Can they resist negative peer pressure?
  • Are they getting the chance to reach their potential?

These are the areas where martial arts can make the biggest difference, and they’re what our junior programs are built around.

Visit before you decide

The best way to choose is to see a class. Watch how the instructor talks to the kids. Are they having fun? Are they being corrected kindly? Do they look proud when they get something right?

Our Junior Karate programs for ages 5 to 7 and ages 8 to 12 start with a free 2-week trial of 4 classes. It’s enough time to know if we’re the right fit for your family.
