Why adults train

More than a workout

  • Stress relief

For an hour, work and screens stay off the mat. You leave clearer than you came in.

  • Fitness that sticks

Strength, cardio, flexibility and balance, with a skill to chase, so it never feels like a chore.

  • Real self-defence

Awareness, distance and simple, effective technique you practise until it’s automatic.

  • Goals at every belt

Stripes and belts give you something to work toward, and the pride of earning it.

  • A welcoming dojo

No egos. Everyone started as a beginner, and the higher belts help the newer ones.

  • Fits after work

Karate at 6:15 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays; kickboxing from 7 pm, Tuesday to Friday.

I have been attending the kickboxing class offered to teens and adults for about 5 months now after taking the free trial, and the experience has been fantastic. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and have created a learning environment that is welcoming to both beginners and more experienced athletes. Additionally, the monthly fee is incredibly reasonable.

Safeguard is my happy place. I started going to Safeguard when I was about 9 and ever since then I have gained so much confidence and strength. I have become super close with the students there.

Questions

What people ask us

Am I too old to start?

No. Adults start at every age. You work at your own level, and it’s worth telling us about any injuries before your first class so we can adjust.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No. Fitness and flexibility come from training, not before it. Start where you are.

Will I be the only beginner?

No. The 45-minute teen and adult karate classes are where beginners start, and kickboxing beginners train alongside everyone with coaching on every round. The 60-minute karate classes are for green belts and up.

Do I have to spar?

No. Partner work is supervised and matched to your experience, and in kickboxing it’s never forced.

What does it cost?

Teen and adult karate is $179 a month. Kickboxing is $179 a month on a 12-month plan, $199 on a 6-month plan or $229 month to month. Both start with a free trial.

What do I wear to the first class?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, and a water bottle. Karate is barefoot on our padded floor; for kickboxing we have gear you can use during your trial.
