Martial arts for kids

Martial arts for kids: confidence, focus and a lot of fun

Kids come for the kicks. They stay because they get better at something every week, and parents notice the difference at home and at school. Classes for ages 3 to 12, taught by Sensei Troy and his Instructor Team.

What kids get from it

Skills that last long after class

  • Focus and listening

Short, clear drills train kids to listen, wait and move on cue. Teachers notice it too.

  • Confidence

A big kiai, a strong stance and a new stripe. Shy kids find their voice here.

  • Respect

Bowing in, saying “Yes, Sensei” and waiting their turn quickly become habits.

  • A strong, coordinated body

Kicks, balance drills and games build strength and flexibility without feeling like a workout.

  • Standing up to bullying

What to say, how to walk away with confidence, and how to stay safe when walking away isn’t enough.

  • Goals they can reach

Stripes and belts give kids a clear next step and the pride of earning it themselves.

An amazing Dojo with excellent instructors. Safeguard was initially recommended to me for my oldest who has ADHD and struggles with impulse control and going here has helped him so much. Both of my boys love Sensei Troy. He is patient and kind and always makes it fun for them.

Troy is fantastic with the kids. He is friendly and patient and is always willing to help out. His volunteers that help in the classes go above and beyond making sure everyone is having fun and participating. Kids always look forward to class and would recommend if you are looking for a great spot in Langley for karate.

Our son has been attending since 2017 and has grown in confidence, strength, ability and has found a social connection as well. The Dojo is always clean and well equipped. They teach more than just the martial art. There is also a focus on empathy, knowing wrong from right, plus the importance of community and of perseverance. We have a deep trust in their commitment to safety.

Questions

What people ask us

What age can my child start?

Tiger TOTS starts at 3. The main thing is that your child can join a group class and follow simple instructions; the class is built around short, fun drills for that age.

My child is shy. Will they be okay?

Shy kids often love it. Classes are structured, so they always know what comes next, and every class has a small win in it. Come 10 minutes early so they can meet Sensei Troy and see the room before it gets busy.

Will martial arts make my child aggressive?

No. Kids learn control and respect first: bowing, listening and using their skills only to stay safe. Self-control is practised in every class.

Karate or kickboxing for my 8 to 12 year old?

Karate is technique, kata, belts and self-defence; Youth Kickboxing is pads, footwork and fitness. Kids who need to burn energy often love kickboxing. Each has its own free trial, so your child can try both.

Can I watch?

Yes. The parents’ viewing area looks right onto the mat, and you’re welcome to watch every class.

What do they wear to the first class?

Comfortable clothes they can move in, and a water bottle. Karate is barefoot on our padded floor.
