Balancing Martial Arts Training, Personal Growth and Lifestyle

A lot of parents are curious as to what the ideal number of martial arts classes per week are in order for their child to advance quickly in the sport. Although we can appreciate the question and desire that goes along with it, there are many other factors that need to be taken into consideration.

Ensuring you’re balancing your child’s martial arts training with their growth, as well as keeping a balanced lifestyle at home, is important to sustainability and continued interest. Burnout is a real concern that can come with any sport – and preventing that through a balanced approach is key.

Beginner Level Martial Arts: What is the Right Amount of Instruction?

At Safeguard Martial Arts, we believe that twice a week is the perfect number of classes for a beginner student. Just because they may want to attend more often, doesn’t mean they should.

Keeping your child interested without becoming overwhelmed plays a big role in the success of those who advance in martial arts. As such, we approach our classes with the intention of longevity, as opposed to quickly acquiring different belt levels as a sign of ‘achievement’.

Choosing martial arts as an actual artform vs. a competition, we believe, also helps create success. By placing less pressure on students to continually reign supreme over another student, you put less pressure on winning and more focus on fitness and fun. Healthy competition is great, but the demands of overtraining to achieve a victory-based goal is detrimental to both a child’s progress and their wellbeing.

Downsizing Activities to Arrive at that ‘Just Right’ Balance

If your child is accustomed to running from school to swimming, to soccer, to music lessons, to dance classes, as well as to martial arts – now is an excellent time to take stock of which extra-curricular activities you may want to cut back on or eliminate all together to help you and your child find a better life balance.

Children need simple playtime and family time that does not require a structured or demanding response. An over-abundance of extra-curricular activities can put a great deal of stress on a child – even though they may appear to love them all, and a great deal of stress on a parent too.

Development of mind and body plays a big part at our martial arts studio in Langley, helping our students find their center.
