There are many important safety features to consider when looking for a martial arts school. This is especially important right now as we manage the spread of Covid-19 throughout our communities; being mindful of health practices from both students and schools.
Aside from the pandemic, however, what is the most important, #1 safety feature you should consider in a martial arts school?
#1 Safety Consideration in a Martial Arts School
At Safeguard Martial Arts in Langley, we feel the primary consideration relative to a safe training experience for students of all ages, is the experience and education of the class instructor. Well trained instructors understand form and physique, and know what the body is capable of and how to ensure that what they teach today, will not negatively impact a student later in life.
To compliment instructor skill, there are many excellent pieces of training equipment available to help the instructor conduct a safe class – the most important of which is the surface they actually train on. Training at a school with a fully padded floor, or high-density matting that covers the entire surface of the training area, is imperative to your immediate and long-term joint health.
If a student is training on hardwood, carpet or cement floors without padding in bare feet, it can cause a lot of damage to the body. Although this may not be immediately apparent in younger participants, in the short-term it can cause everything from sprains and strains to broken bones, and in the long-term it can lead to potential knee replacement surgery, chronic back and neck pain, and joint and tendon degeneration.
The Benefit of a Padded Surface for Martial Arts
A correctly padded surface will properly absorb the shock of various movements to the body during martial arts training, creating a safer and more comfortable training environment. This gives teachers and students alike a more pleasant learning experience without the residual impact that hard surfaces will have on the body. It delivers the proper safety measures from which to train effectively, allowing you to enjoy this artform for years to come.
