Jun 9, 2022 | Uncategorized

With school winding down and summer just around the corner, many parents are deciding on which summer sport in the Fraser Valley to enroll their child in. And Safeguard Martial Arts would like to extend some considerations to help make your choice an easier one!

What is the Purpose of the Summer Sport in the Fraser Valley?

Understanding what you want out of an activity is an important first step. Whether it’s acquiring an added skillset, honing a current skill, having fun, or even just simply finding a safe space that offers an active daycare for your child. Pinpointing the ‘why’ in order to find the ‘what’ will help to streamline your decision.

What is the Focus?

Depending on the reason for the activity of your choosing, understanding what the focus or philosophy of any given program is, is also important. If you are simply being offered a place for fun and entertainment, it will not likely be a fit for honing skills. So ask what the focus with be in order to help make your decision.

Summer Staff Training

Often time’s summer sports programs will need to hire additional ‘hands on deck’ to assist with an influx of eager new-comers. Such staff is usually chosen on availability and affordability. This means a lot of young people who are off school and available to monitor your children. This also means, these will not be highly trained individuals able to offer high-level skills training. So choose according to staff training as well.

Student-to-Teacher Ratio

Again, if your objective is merely to have a safe and fun space for your child to enjoy some summer activities, the student to teacher ratio isn’t overly important. However, if skillset is the objective, ensure the activity of your choosing offers well-planned classes, as well as the right level of student-to-teach ratio.

Safety Safety Safety!

Here at Safeguard, safety is our #1 priority any time of the year – which includes our environment, as well as our training.

As discussed in our blog What is the #1 Safety Feature You Should Consider in a Martial Arts School post

At Safeguard Martial Arts in Langley, we feel the primary consideration relative to a safe training experience for students of all ages, is the experience and education of the class instructor. Well trained instructors understand form and physique, and know what the body is capable of and how to ensure that what they teach today, will not negatively impact a student later in life.

To compliment instructor skill, there are many excellent pieces of training equipment available to help the instructor conduct a safe class – the most important of which is the surface they actually train on.  Training at a school with a fully padded floor, or high-density matting that covers the entire surface of the training area, is imperative to your immediate and long-term joint health.

These are just some of the suggestions we think can help parents make the best choice when it comes to choosing a summer sport in the Fraser Valleyfor their child.
